Ewald Ammende Donostias (1933)

Ewald Ammende (3. jaanuar 1893 Pärnu (vkj. 22. detsember 1892) – 15. aprill 1936 Peking) oli baltisaksa publitsist ja ühiskonnategelane.

Ta pärines jõukast kaupmeeste suguvõsast. Tema isa Hermann Leopold Ammende (1855–1934) oli lisaks kaupmehele veel Pärnu linnaduuma nõunik ja linna maksuameti juhataja. Tal oli 6 last, tütar (lastest vanim) ja 5 poega, kellest Ewald oli eelviimane. Kõik lapsed said suureks. Isa laskis oma tütre (Ewaldi õe) pulmadeks ehitada Ammende villa, mis valmis 1904–05.

Ewald Ammende lõpetas kohaliku gümnaasiumi. Tema klassikaaslased olid Jüri Uluots, Johannes Semper ja Johannes Vares-Barbarus.

Seejärel õppis ta kaubandust Riias, majandust Kölnis ja Tübingenis ning sai doktorikraadi politoloogia alal Kielist.

1922 oli ta Euroopa Saksa Vähemuste Liidu üks asutajaid. Liidu esindajana pidas ta läbirääkimisi Eesti valitsusega, kes koostas rahvusvähemuste seadust. Seadus võeti vastu 1925 ja Ammende oli selle kaasautor.

Ta oli Euroopa rahvusvähemuste kongressi peasekretär 1925–1936. Ammende osales teabe hankimise kampaanias näljahäda kohta Volga-äärses piirkonnas ja külastas Nõukogude Venemaad 1921. aastal Eesti Punase Risti missiooni koosseisus. 1931–1932 jälgis ta Ukraina näljahäda sündmusi, seejärel andis välja raamatu "Kas Venemaa peab nälgima?" ("Muss Russland hungern?", 1935), mis sisaldas Alexander Wienerbergeri aastatel 1932–1933 Harkivi piirkonnas tehtud fotosid.

Ewald Ammende suri 15. aprillil 1936 Saksa haiglas Pekingis ebaselgetel asjaoludel. Tema järel võttis Euroopa rahvusvähemuste kongressi juhtimise üle tema vend Erich Ammende (1889 – 1936 Viin), kes oli varem oli olnud Ewaldi parem käsi, kuid Erich suri kõigest 7 kuud hiljem.

Ewald Ammende on maetud Pärnu Alevi kalmistule. Kuni surmani säilitas ta Eesti kodakondsuse.
