Hello, would appreciate some input on the FUR for the above image, currently being used to illustrate the infobox at "Those Old Scientists". I have been reverted when I removed it, citing the poor fair use rationale (the animated characters depicted are not discussed in the production or reception sections, and neither is the scene/gag itself) so would appreciate feedback. The rationale on the file page could be a bit stronger, but the fact that the body of the article does talk of this scene, and how its unique for SNW, seems to otherwise get there for NFCC#8. Masem (t) 14:37, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free album covers used in main infoboxes of articles about deceased musicians

I'm curious what others think about File:Album cover of Nephi the Polynesian man.jpg and the way it's being used in Nephi Hannemann in terms of WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and item 9 of WP:NFC#UUI. There are actual photos of Hannemann (like this and this that seem better encyclopedically, even if they need to be licensed as non-free. The use of the album cover seems a bit much here, particularly if the main reason for using it as stated in non-free use rationale to benefit Hannemann's estate. UUI#9 doesn't specifically mention album covers, but the same reasoning would seem to be applicable. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:57, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, unless for some reason the album cover is known as the most iconic photo of a deceased person, this is not appropriate use for album covers, barring existence of any other photo of that person. Masem (t) 14:55, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

An ongoing discussion at FFD has made wonder whether it would it might be a good idea to create a new copyright license for events (natural or otherwise) given that {{Non-free historic image}} seems to be being used in many cases even when the photo itself isn't really "historic" per WP:ITSHISTORIC. Even though the license {{Non-free fair use}} already exists and could possibly work, perhaps something a little more specific (i.e., Non-free event) would be better, particularly for photos taken by third-parties that might end up appearing on social media or in media organization reports on the event. -- Marchjuly (talk) 15:24, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

NFC#UUI

Is it time to take a look at WP:NFC#UUI as a whole and consider whether its wording needs to be updated or otherwise tweaked? My understanding of this section has always been that it just list some common examples of NFC use (at least examples that were common at one point) that were previously discussed and generally considered to be, for the most part, non-NFCC compliant. Of course, Since NFC is supposed to be assessed on a per case basis, there's always a case that even one of the UUI could be OK per policy; it's just that they're not in many cases. My concern is that some people might be reading the UUI too literally and assuming things not specifically mentioned by name can't be covered by it. For example, since item 5 specifcally mentions "war", item 6 mentions "to illustrate an article about the image", item 9 mentions only "magazine or book cover", etc., some seem to be assuming that those particular UUI only apply to those particular things, regardless of what the reasoning behind the UUI seems (at least to me) to be. Even though WP:NFC#Unacceptable use begins with the sentence "The following is a non-exhaustive list of examples where non-free content may not be used outside of the noted exceptions." some people don't seem to see it that way, and seem to be reading it as applying only those examples. I'm not suggesting every possible example of non-free use needs to be listed since that would be not productive at all, but perhaps there's a way to rephrase some of the UUI to make them seem "less specific". For example, maybe "war" and "image" in items 5 and 6 could be changed to "event", "occurence" or "item", maybe "baseball card" in item 8 could be change to "trading card", maybe "magazine or book cover" in item 9 could be changed to "cover art", or other similar changes could be made. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:48, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
