A good place to start is the Library of Congress. The name listed under 'Publisher' is often the founder of the newspaper, you can cross-reference the name with historical sources for more information. (Resources are listed by state)

The American Newspaper Representatives have lists by state.
Beef up your article with history and recognition. Articles that include significant history and recognition/awards are less likely to be deleted.
