Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Dannie Druehyld, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. they all speak significantly about him, and at least 4 of them (Musicrow/2, AZSongwriters/5, Tennesseean/7, and Musicrow/6) are independent and reliable Jishara (talk) 15:08, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

1 is a transcript of a video created by Mills himself, therefore a primary source. 3 and 4 are interviews, meaning they are also primary sources. 5 is routine coverage of a meeting he's about to have. "Local person to do random thing at local venue" coverage is historically not considered SIGCOV. 7 is paywalled, so I'm not sure how in-depth it is or isn't. I'm still not sold on the two MusicRow blurbs because of how short they are. Do you think they're SIGCOV, given how short they are?

The ASCAP awards he won just verify that his song was recorded by somebody. They aren't equivalent to a Grammy or Country Music Association award. I have songs in BMI (ASCAP's main rival), meaning I am theoretically capable of winning a similar award from them. As I said, he himself was never nominated for those two Grammys; Diamond Rio and Trisha Yearwood were the nominees for his work, meaning it is inaccurate for him or sources about him to call him a two-time Grammy nominee. Also, as I pointed out with examples, other creatives who did notable works can still be deleted if the sourcing just isn't there (again, I still can't find any proof Danny Orton is from Louisiana, which is a big red flag). Notability is WP:NOTINHERITED.

The sourcing is still paper-thin here, and literally all we seem to know about him biographically is that he's from Mississippi. Still, good on you for backing up your stance. I've seen far too many editors completely ignore inquiries for sourcing and just blindly state "he wrote a notable song so he's notable" without trying to WP:PROVEIT. Hi! Thanks for the response. I'm sold on the Musicrow ones because they both surpass WP:100WORDS, hanging out at around 230ish words each - and it seems to be a reliable source re: country music. I'm not sure how long Tennessean is either, but given that the pre-paywall chunk is already half of the 100 words, I'm fairly comfortable that it is likely to be sufficient. Also, AZSongwriters is based in Arizona while Mills is born in Mississippi/lives in Nashville, so not sure it's local person at local venue, though i see your point that it may be routine. Still, while the sourcing is lighter than ideal, i think it's sufficient.

Hey Jishara. The coordinators were deliberating on one of your submissions, which is what caused the delay — the leaderboard is now updated! I unfortunately had to decline your submission of Amadu Bansang Jobarteh's GAN review under the relevant section of the scoring rules, as the review was too short to meet the criteria. This is not to say that your review was invalid, however, just that we ask for a slightly higher standard in contest submissions to ensure that participants are doing their due diligence. The easy way to clear the threshold is to make it explicit that you've evaluated all of the GA criteria (which you've done) as well as to show the results of your spot-check (which you did for Wuhsha al-dallala) even when you detect no issues. I think this GAN review is a good example of how, even when approaching "quick pass" territory, a review can be decently in-depth. Hi Jishara! We deliberated on your last submission, Leonid Kravchuk, and I am sorry to inform you that the submission has been declined. We felt that the review did not fully address all of the GA criteria. A brief read-through of a few of the paragraphs revealed several clear grammatical and prose issues, for e.g. "Kravchuk refused their demands to dissolve the condemn the coup" , " by the time Kravchuk and Hurenko were appointed their positions", "Following the Act of Declaration of Independence Kravchuk was vested with presidential powers". Given that the article is well over 8k words, there could be a few more of these. For future reviews, it would be helpful if you can spend a little more time checking the prose and ensuring that each of the GA criteria is explicitly considered before making a decision. Thanks! Hey Jishara, I'm here to convey the coordinator team's concern over the GAN reviews you've been submitting to the contest. A patterm appears to be emerging of reviews that do not fully engage with the criteria or go into enough depth with the text. In addition to the declines mentioned above, I've just had to decline three more:

• Philoxenos Yuhanon Dolabani: front-facing issues with source reliability as I mentioned in this discussion, indicating inadequate engagement with criterion 2b.
• Korean shamanism: far too short; almost no prose comments for an article with 9500+ words, too few sources spot-checked and without evidence of verification.
• Grigor Parlichev: clear copyright issues as I brought up in this discussion, some of which was visible using Earwig, indicating inadequate engagement with criterion 2d.

Under the contest rules, the coordinators have the discretion to disqualify contestents who repeatedly fail to meet the expectations of the contest and its surrounding processes. We've never had to resort to this before, and we would not like to start now. Hi @TechnoSquirrel69: Thanks for taking the time to make these comments. Sorry if my reasoning was unclear:

for Philoxenos Yuhanon Dolabani, I found Assyrian Post reliable after going through its editorial policy and discussion of what its editorial staff does, and Huyada due to it also being a long-standing, mainstream-ish print newspaper (which i thought met the presumption of editorial input).

for Korean Shamanism, i thought in terms of the spot check the guideline was at least 5 per Wikipedia:Good article reviewing guide, but I decided to go a bit above considering the length and do 16. I guess that was insufficient, so my apologies about that. As for the prose, I was surprised too - I spent a while going through it checking for anything but there wasn't much - I tweaked the things I saw and then asked the nominator to also check. then i did a double check after hearing back from them and couldn't find any errors in prose.

for Parlichev, after running the Earwig check I didn't find any issues (the closest % was the 13.8% from CECOT, but after looking at it I didn't think there was a problem - it seems i need to check the structural mirroring more closely). As for the quotes, I was not aware there was a WP policy re quotes in the reference section and just thought those were there for convenience of checking like is sometimes done in DYK, especially in hard to access sources or those in another language.

Of course I'm willing to step back from doing GAN reviews. I do have a few that are open, though - some that I've reviewed and put on hold, and some that I haven't reviewed yet. I'll take these one by one.

• The threshold to be met here is a "reputation for fact-checking and accuracy". This is determined in a number of ways (see the diversity of analysis in this RSN discussion about The Assyria Post ), but a common baseline we often look for is a real editorial board consisting of professionals or an expert peer-review process. This is not presumed; if I don't see this in a source (and no other exception such as ABOUTSELF applies), I will question its reliability in a review. Print sources are more likely to have editors, in my experience, but this isn't always the case, so that can't be assumed either.
• To be honest, I hadn't heard about the good article reviewing guide; the more common page I link people to is the "official" reviewing instructions, which is more aligned with community consensus. As you can see, it doesn't specify a minimum number of spot-checks, which is by design — the number that is necessary depends on the article. Korean shamanism has 28 sources and 478 unique footnotes, of which you said you checked 16 (3%). Opinions differ on what is truly necessary, but that's very low. I would recommend trying out Veracity, which randomly picks some proportion of the footnotes for you to check, and should also address the problem of nobody knowing which sources you're actually checking. As for prose, it's hard for me to say what's missing without doing a prose review myself, but again, 9500+ words and no comments apart from punctuation is practically unheard of. In this case, I didn't look much further since the review was already failing the DCWC's length requirements, which are slightly more demanding than the GAN process wants.
• Earwig has its limitations; I usually completely ignore the overlap percentage and go straight to the text to see what that overlap is. If it's just proper nouns or titles of sources, that's fine, but if entire sentences are highlighted, that indicates a problem. Earwig also cannot detect close paraphrasing — that needs to be carefully assessed by hand during spot-checks.

I hope that helps. I'm glad to see that you're open to reducing your pace with GAN reviews, though I should clarify my intent here. I don't mean to stop you from doing a review ever again, I just want you to make sure you're spending enough time with each one and giving it the care it needs. If you feel you can do that for the review you've committed to, go right ahead; I'm not the boss of you. Also, thanks for letting me know about Veracity, that definitely sounds like a useful tool and could hopefully improve my review. As for the Earwig assessments too, that makes a lot of sense - I'll make sure to do more of a close check on those, as previously what I was doing is running an Earwig and then also checking it with the sources that I spotchecked.

I definitely think I can spend enough time with each one - I spend quite a bit of time with each of my reviews to assess all the criteria. These tools and info you've provided are really helpful and I think will also help my process a lot: I appreciate them a lot.

Hi Jishara, I'm confused by your deprods of Antioch, Van Zandt County, Texas and several other articles. I don't see any evidence they were legally recognized places as stipulated by WP:NPLACE, as they were never incorporated as towns. The state historical association is a reliable source, but it does not constitute official recognition, and single-paragraph entries are not significant coverage. I disagree re it being sigcov - while it's short, it's a full-blown entry that seems to sum up what there is to know about the ghost town, which was inhabited and had things such as a church and a school. It also, in turn, cites its own source, too, the county history - which appears to be inaccessible online but that can't be held against it under WP:ONLINE and its existence, along with the state historical association article, is, IMO, enough reason for this PROD to be contested. Hi! You might be notable, but I personally much prefer articles with significant biographical information on their subjects. Can you track down the best few sources on you? Ideally, they'd be profiles or articles of that kind. I'd also recommend you consider drafting your own article for yourself (disclosing your conflict of interest) at WP:AFC, though that choice is up to you.
