Corpse Bride is a 2005 stop motion fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson.

Plot

Set in a 19th century European village, the story follows Victor (Depp), a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride (Bonham-Carter), while his real bride, Victoria (Watson), grieves for him in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love.

Cast

  • Before Pirates, Burton had to convince studios to cast Depp in his films. After Pirates, studios wanted Burton to cast Depp. Depp compared the character to Edward Scissorhands and Ichabod Crane. Both of an inept outsider and bumbly.[1]

Production

  • Inspired by Howard Schwartz's retelling of the Jewish folktale "The Finger," from the book Lilith's Cave: Jewish Tales of the Supernatural (1987) ISBN 0-19-506726-6.[2]
  • By August 2003: Pamela Pettler had written a script titled The Corpse Bride with Mike Johnson directing for Warner Bros. and Burton producing.[4]
  • June 2004: Depp signs on to lend his voice. Initially set for release in October 2005. Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Albert Finney, Richard Grant, Joanna Lumley and Christopher Lee will provide character voices for the latter film, being made in London simultaneously with Charlie.[5]
  • Burton said he had drawn visual inspiration for "Corpse" from cult Italo horrormeister Mario Bava's Kill, Baby, Kill.[6]
  • One thing that helped speed up the production was the introduction of new camera methods. In addition to fully armatronned rigs (which allow the camera to move around its subject three-dimensionally), Johnson said, "We shot Corpse Bride using digital still cameras… so that helped a lot." Adamant not to use CGI. Edward Gorey-like Nightmare.[7]

  • Teaser trailer came in January 2005 for the Internet. Michael Cohn, Caroline Thompson and Pamela Pettler were listed as the 3 most recent writers. McFarlane Toys has been named the master toy licensee for the film. So you can expect a full line of cool-looking merch. McFarlane is expected to create action figures, bendable figures, PVC and plush toys. They'll also make fashion dolls, bobbleheads, novelties and gifts such as candles, glassware mugs, pewter pieces and ornaments for Corpse Bride.[11]
  • July 2005: At this year's Comic-Con, producer Allison Abatte and Director Mike Johnson spoke about the film before screening a lengthy musical clip. It was the scene showing the origin of the Bride.[7]

Based on 178 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of the critics enjoyed the film with an average score of 7.2/10. Consensus: "As can be expected from a Tim Burton movie, Corpse Bride is whimsically macabre, visually imaginative, and emotionally bittersweet."[14] The film was more balanced with the 33 critics in Rotten Tomatoes "Top Critics" poll, receiving a 91% approval rating with a 7.6/10 score.[15] By comparison, Metacritic calculated an average score of 83/100 based on 35 reviews.[16]

  • Limited release in the United States on September 16, 2005. Wide release on September 23, 2005 in 3,204 theaters. Earned $19,145,480 in its opening weekend. Grossed $53,359,111 in US totals and $63,835,950 in foreign territories. Worldwide total of $117,195,061.[17]
