Wikipedia’s Intentional Distortion of the History of the Holocaust – A study by Jan Grabowski and Shira Klein that presented eleven primary problematic editors, with several others mentioned as contributors, who deliberately spread Holocaust misinformation.[1][2] The study spurred an investigation and ruling by Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee that resulted in two users receiving topic bans due to uncivil language. The bans may be appealed every twelve months.[3] One of the editors banned, François Robere, was trying to remove the misinformation.[4][3] Klein said in response, "So the message of this case is, there’s no problem with falsifying the past; just be nice about it."[3]
After the Scots Wikipedia controversy, The Guardian noted a systemic issue in Wikipedia's culture: power and leniency are often afforded based on seniority and edit volume rather than quality of work.[5]
Folly – Building designed to suggest utilitarian purpose, but in fact has none
Essjay – A Wikipedia user who falsely presented themselves as a university professor of religion, and was eventually "elected to top positions of trust by the community, including administrator and arbitrator," and even defended by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales before their deceit uncovered.
