Robert Görl (* 15. Juni 1955 in München) ist ein deutscher Musiker. Er gründete zusammen mit Gabi Delgado-López die Musikgruppe Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF). Zudem veröffentlichte Robert Görl mehrere Soloalben, darunter Night Full of Tension, auf dem Annie Lennox an einigen Songs mitwirkte.

Robert Görl (born 15 June 1955 in Munich) is a German musician. Together with Gabi Delgado-López, he founded the group Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF). In addition, Robert Görl released several solo albums, among them Night Full of Tension, on which Annie Lennox contributed to some songs.

Leben

Life

Mit 18 Jahren erhielt Görl Schlagzeugunterricht durch den Jazzer Freddie Brocksieper. Im Jahr 1974 begann er eine klassische Musikausbildung am Leopold-Mozart-Konservatorium in Augsburg und ab 1976 an der Hochschule in Graz. Neben seinem Studium widmete er sich dem Jazz. Im Jahre 1978 unterbrach er sein Studium, ging nach London und wandte sich der Punk-Musik zu. Im gleichen Jahr traf er Gabriel „Gabi“ Delgado-López in Düsseldorf, mit dem er gemeinsam die Gruppe DAF gründete. Robert Görl wirkte bei DAF als Komponist und Musiker. Insgesamt veröffentlichten DAF von 1979 bis 2003 sieben Studioalben.

At age 18, Görl received drum lessons from the jazz musician Freddie Brocksieper. In 1974, he began classical music training at Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg and went to the academy in Graz in 1976. Alongside his studies, he devoted himself to jazz. In 1978, he left the academy, went to London, and turned to punk music. He met Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López in Düsseldorf, with whom he co-founded the group DAF. Robert Görl served as a composer and musician for the group. In total, DAF released seven studio albums between 1979 and 2003.

In 1989, Robert Görl was involved in a serious car accident. Afterward, he became a Buddhist and traveled through Asia for three years of study.[14] After his return, he released diverse solo albums and singles throughout the 1990s on Disko B, a Munich-based techno label run by Peter Wacha.

Reception

Beyond Eden received a positive review in The Vancouver Sun, with critic Peter Birnie calling it "a genuinely compelling and largely successful attempt to blend 'white' and 'Indian' sensibilities."[17][permanent dead link] Kathleen Oliver of The Georgia Straight gave the musical a mixed review, praising the cast, musical score, and background projections but holding that the story and characterizations fell short.[18]

In a detailed critique in his 2020 book Hungry Listening: Resonant Theory for Indigenous Sound Studies, Dylan Robinson explains that Beyond Eden "omits specific information surrounding the cultural and spiritual significance of the poles," which is largely unknown to non-Indigenous audiences apart from the poles' use in "cultural iconography."[19] In so doing, the musical embraces a "salvage paradigm," implying that the Haida were unable to care for their own culture and needed outsiders to preserve it for them, and "elide[s] important questions about public entitlement to Indigenous culture."
