This is definitly not an obscene gesture, its more of a salute, among metalheads anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.81.35.224 (talk) 02:12, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2011-02-12T02:12:00.000Z","author":"207.81.35.224","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-207.81.35.224-2011-02-12T02:12:00.000Z-Sign_of_the_Horns","replies":[]}}-->

Does this really belong? As an aggie I might be a bit biased, but it seems like this is a bit esoteric to make this template. It isn't so unique among celebratory gestures. • Removed the image from the template. It quite clearly doesn't belong on all the pages the template appears on. Please get a consensus before replacing it. The template doesn't need an image, and tucked at the bottom of the page is not a good place for an image anyway. Heh, being an ugly American, I'm afraid I don't even know what to call it.. but you know what I mean. Two fingers up, with the palm facing the giver (knuckles facing the receiver). Seems at least as notable as the Shocker, but it's not in this template. Oh, I found it.. only problem is, it's a subsection of an article that the template already links to. Hrmph... Neither I nor the other person who commented on the V sign talk page has heard this gesture referred to as a "bowfinger" in the UK. The term doesn't appear in the OED and isn't easily findable with Google. (It doesn't even make sense — this is a gesture made with two fingers.) Perhaps it's called a bowfinger in the US but, if so, linking a predominantly British gesture by its American name seems inappropriate. I suggest changing the template to link the relevant section of the V sign article as "V sign", even though the peace/victory version of the sign is shown elsewhere. Should Handwaving perhaps be included? Despite its name, the article focusses on the argument technique called "handwaving", but there is a short section which describes the actual gesture. As someone pointed out, the current use of Image:The Thumbs-up position.jpg on the template may not be ideal, because the gesture is considered highly obscene in some cultures (something akin to the the finger, perhaps). The picture is wonderful and definitely appropriate for the Thumbs up article, but we should probably try to find something more culturally neutral. I was wondering about the "I love you" gesture, but the best candidate I've yet found (Image:I love you-gesture.JPG) may not highlight the specific subject well enough to be clear what we're referring to. Should we remove the image, pending a replacement?

Along similar lines, I notice thumbs up is listed as a "friendly" gesture. Not to impugn the motives of the involved editors, but perhaps it would be less ethnocentric if we found another means of categorization? Say, by part(s) of the body involved in the gesture? This suggestion is less urgent than the image issue, though. Looks like somebody switched it to the "Shocker," which is pretty inappropriate. I was going to revert it, but saw this discussion regarding "Thumbs Up", so I switched it to "Hang Loose," which, as far as I know, is not vulgar to anybody.
