| The wording "also known as Bombay" was accepted according to these two discussions: Talk:Mumbai/Archive 15#Mumbai vs Bombay argument and Talk:Mumbai/Archive 15#Name of the city. While the city has been officially renamed 'Mumbai', it continues to be referred to as Bombay, and Wikipedia documents such usage per WP:NPOV. |

I noticed that the section discussing the city’s local transportation briefly mentioned the suburban railway but did not clearly explain how central it is to daily life in Mumbai. Add a short sentence explaining that the Mumbai Suburban Railway is one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world and that it serves millions of passengers every day. Hello -- in the first paragraph of the article, the phrase "a alpha world city" appears. I believe it should be "an alpha world city."
P.S. This is my first edit request on a protected article! Is there a standard form for the subject line for these? StrangeAsterism (talk) 20:30, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Under Etymology section, it says Duarte Barbosa in 1516 used “Tana-Maiambu” and that “Maiambu” referred to Mumbadevi Temple / Mumbadevi, citing Shirodkar 1998, p. 2. The Portuguese version of this same article, citing Cunha 1900, p. 43, instead says Duarte Barbosa used “Benamajambu” (Transliteration:Tana-Maiambu) and argues that “majambu” (maiambu) referred to Mahim, not to Mumbadevi. (Alguns autores pretendem que majambu poderá ser uma alusão a Mumbadevi. No entanto, enquanto que Bena refere-se provavelmente a Tana, majambu parece referir-se somente à ilha vizinha de Mahim, ambos os locais atualmente subúrbios de Bombaim). This is a different interpretation based on the sources used, but it matters for the neutrality of this article, therefore I suggest adding it in. After citation [47], add the line "However, other scholars argue that “maiambu” appears to refer instead to the neighboring island of Mahim, which is now a suburb of Mumbai." with the citation "Cunha, Joseph G. (1900), Origin of Bombay".
Secondly, the following info needs to be checked: Citation 47[b] has a note that says :"Portuguese linguist José Pedro Machado attributes that interpretation to a deficient knowledge of the Portuguese language, mixing up the Portuguese word "bom" with the English "bay", from the English version of the name." It is the word "bahia" (today spelt "baía") that means bay, while "bom" means good, so it would be hard to see the confusion there. Hence this note requires verification. I suggest changing "Portuguese word "bom"" to "Portuguese word "baia"". Alternatively, this note should be rewritten as it is also unclear whether the initial editor meant to write "mixing up" or joining the two words/syllables together. Thanks. Inaccurate wording.
Change the image text "The Mumba Devi Temple, from whom the city of Mumbai may derive its name." To "The Mumba Devi Temple, named after the goddess Mumba Devi, from whom the city may derive its name." Håkon L. Aunet (talk) 08:44, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
