Many of these questions arise frequently on the talk page concerning Derry, Northern Ireland.

Under City Walls section, clarifying language suggestion

Under "City Walls", paragraph 2, the current description says "The Walls were built in 1613–1619 by The Honourable The Irish Society as defences for early 17th-century settlers from England and Scotland."

This may suggest that the settlers were being protected from England and Scotland. I suggest changing the wording to "...settlers who came from England and Scotland." and/or adding "...as part of the Plantation of Ulster." 2A01:AC:1002:C200:B7E3:D617:A7C3:F5FD (talk) 10:51, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

City Name Rule Change Proposal, proposal to fairly represent population with both names as the rule

I would like clarification on where discussion of this naming convention should take place, as it is not clear to me from the current guidance.

I believe there is a case for revisiting the practice of using "Derry" as the default city name in article text. Given the continued use of both "Derry" and "Londonderry" by significant sections of the population and in public life, I would like to discuss whether a dual form such as "Derry~Londonderry", or another agreed convention, would better reflect this usage where practical.

The distinction between the city and the county is also relevant. While "County Derry" is a commonly used informal term, the historic and official county name is "County Londonderry", and it should be made clear that the county's naming history differs from that of the city.

I would appreciate links to the relevant discussions that established the current convention, and whether there is an established process for proposing a change to it. Given that Wikipedia's conventions can evolve through consensus, it seems reasonable that this issue can be revisited if there is sufficient support and evidence from reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ~2026-36655-79 (talk) 13:56, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
