Nimrods (previously titled as New Year's Rev) is a 2025 American coming-of-age road comedy film written and directed by Lee Kirk. The film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Jolene Keen Ruffalo, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Sean Gunn, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tré Cool, and Mckenna Grace. It follows three teenagers who travel from Kansas City to Los Angeles under the belief that their band is opening for Green Day on New Year's Eve.

Nimrods premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2025, and is set to be released by Inaugural Entertainment in the United States on August 14, 2026.[2] The film received generally positive reviews from critics.

Premise

Nimrods is based on Green Day's limited success as a band before the release of their breakout album Dookie (1994). Three teenagers - Tommy, Fred, and Chad - travel to Los Angeles under the false pretense that their band Analog Dogs is opening for Green Day on New Year's Eve.

Production

In June 2022, director Lee Kirk appeared on the podcast Office Ladies, hosted by actresses Jenna Fischer, his wife, and Angela Kinsey. During the podcast, Kirk revealed that he was working on another film with Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of punk rock band Green Day.[3] Kirk had previously worked with Armstrong on the comedy-drama film Ordinary World (2016), which featured Armstrong as the lead.[4]

In February 2025, Live Nation Productions, the film and television production branch of Live Nation Entertainment, announced that a comedy film inspired by Green Day was in production, with Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust in lead roles, and Fischer, Kinsey, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, and Keen Ruffalo in supporting roles.[5] Later that month, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn were cast in supporting roles in the film.[6]

In April 2026, it was announced that the film, originally known as New Years Rev, was acquired by Inaugural Entertainment and retitled Nimrods.[2]

It features various songs from Green Day's discography; one new Green Day song, "I'm Never Gonna R.I.P."; a handful of Green Day live recordings that have never been officially released before; and songs by Analog Dogs—the fictional band comprising the film's main characters—and real-life artists Mckenna Grace, the Paradox, and Ultra Q.[7]

Release

Nimrods premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2025 under its original title New Year's Rev.[15][16] It will officially release on August 14, 2026.

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 75% of 44 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The website's consensus reads: "Driven by an energetic mix of Green Day hits and deep cuts, Nimrods overcomes its familiar road comedy elements with a charmingly scrappy DIY spirit and winning performances."[17] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 66 out of 100, based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[18]

Dan Gentile of SFGate gave the film a positive review, praising the three "spot-on" lead performances and stating that the film "hits all the right notes."[19]
