World War I: The Acheron -class destroyer struck a mine at the western end of the Heligoland Bight and sank with the loss of 49 of her 70 crew.

The steamer caught fire at King's Wharf, Wellington, New Zealand . Due to her cargo of benzine she was towed out into the harbour, eventually drifting on to rocks at the north end of Somes Island where she burned furiously for a half hour before exploding, a total loss.[ 4]
