The Indian Navy is the naval warfare branch of the Indian Armed Forces. As of 2023[update], the navy has 135+ warships on active commission.[1] The principal assets include its fleet of two aircraft carriers, 20 submarines – which serves for nuclear deterrence and gives second strike capability; and its amphibious assault ships.[2] Other vessels in the fleet include various classes of destroyers, frigates, corvettes, and other auxiliary and smaller vessels.[1]
As per the Maritime Capability Perspective Plan (MCPP), the Indian navy had set the objective of the service becoming a 175-ship fleet by 2035. Though the navy is facing issues of budgetary funding, ageing fleet and delays in the construction of naval assets, it is expected to have a fleet of 155–160 ships by 2030.[1][3] The Indian navy also lacks certain capability-specific assets such as mine countermeasures vessels, and a quantitatively lesser number of ships such as attack submarines.[4]
