José de Jesus Peixoto Camargo (born August 6, 1946), or simply J.J. Camargo, is a Brazilian thoracic surgeon, writer, and lecturer.[1]

Education and career

Camargo graduated from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1970 and received specialized training in thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic. As of 2022, he was a professor at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre.[citation needed]

Camargo and his team performed the first ever lung transplantation in Brazil and Latin America in 1989,[2][3] as well as the first ever double lung transplant in Brazil.[4] He and his team also hold the record for the most lung transplants in the country.[5] Sixty percent of lung transplants performed in Brazil during 2015 are attributed to them.[6] He has performed approximately 300 lung transplants, being the only person to perform these operations outside of the United States. At Santa Casa, he has performed over 30,000 thoracic surgeries.[1]

Camargo created and currently directs "Transplantes da Santa Casa de Porto Alegre" (Transplant Center at Santa Casa de Porto Alegre). He is also the Director of "Cirurgia Torácica no Pavilhão Pereira Filho" (Thoracic Surgery at Pavilhão Pereira Filho)[1]

He has hundreds of scientific publications and has given approximately 900 lectures in 22 countries[1]
