Ronald Ian Charles Bartsch AM (born 8 April 1954) is an Australian aviation lawyer, academic, pilot and author.[1] He is recognized for his contributions to aviation safety and regulatory compliance, and frequently appears in international media as a commentator on aviation regulation.[2][3]

Bartsch was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2021 Australia Day Honours for "significant service to aviation law, and to safety and compliance."[4][5]

Education

Bartsch holds multiple degrees from the University of Sydney, including a Bachelor of Science in Pure Mathematics, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Education, and a Master of Philosophy. He also earned a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Laws from the University of Technology Sydney.[6][7]

Career

Aviation and Safety

Bartsch began his career in flight operations, serving as a Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor at Navair Pty Ltd. He subsequently worked for the Australian Department of Aviation as an Examiner of Airmen. Within the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), he held senior roles as a Flight Operations Inspector and Manager of Airline Operations.[7][8] In the 2021 Australia Day Honor’s List, Professor Bartsch was appointed by the Governor-General of Australia as a Member of the Order of Australia for his "Significant services to aviation law, and safety and compliance".[4][5]

In the private sector, Bartsch served as the Group General Manager of Safety, Compliance, and Operational Risk for Qantas Airways.[9] He later founded Avlaw Aviation Consulting and UAS International, where he serves as chairman, focusing on international standards for unmanned aircraft systems.[10][11][12][13]
