Pale Jay (stage name) is a Los Angeles-based R&B artist and music producer known for his red knit mask and soulful sound. His music is released via the Karma Chief Records imprint of Colemine Records.

Pale Jay's vocals have been compared to Donny Hathaway, J Dilla, The Chi-Lites, Labi Siffre, Carole King; and his visual style to Khruangbin and HorsegiirL among others.

Life and career

While little is known about where Pale Jay was born or raised, he has referred to Bobby McFerrin as an early inspiration and purportedly studied Jazz at university.[1] Concrete Playground Magazine has called his sound "a seductive blend of slow disco, lovelorn soul and Afrobeats,"[2] termed by DAZED to be "blue-music"[3] despite Pale Jay's red mask. He typically sings in what has been called a "fragile" or "smokey" falsetto.[1][4]

Time Out Finland has called Pale Jay "the masked soul artist sometimes described as the Banksy of the music world."[5] In an interview with Wordplay Magazine, Pale Jay explained his breed of music as "soulful, dusty and straight from the heart" and stated that essentials in his studio are "computer, water and light."[1] Earthy metaphors ground much of his work, including a 2024 single "The Garden" that he describes in a BroadwayWorld.com feature as "safeguarding the inner sanctuary" of music from "external expectations and the relentless demands of capitalism."[6] Love, heartbreak, and odes to both heroes and friends are known entities in his music.[7][8]

Pale Jay first released debut EP The Celestial Suite in 2021, inspired by John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme,"[9] and his debut LP Bewilderment in August 2023 after signing with Karma Chief. Goldmine Magazine reviewed Bewilderment favorably, calling it "an addicting listen," with a "clean 'boom-bap' rhythm section, and an ethereality that borders psychedelia."[4]

He started touring in 2025,[2] and has performed at festivals globally ranging from Australia's Vivid LIVE, to Finland's Pori Jazz, to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival.[10]

Pale Jay is a self-described introvert.[3]
