Markus Thesleff is a Finnish-born restaurateur and hospitality entrepreneur based in London.[2][3]
He is the founder and chief executive of Thesleff Group, a hospitality company operating restaurant, bar and nightlife concepts in the United Kingdom and internationally.[2][4]
Before founding Thesleff Group, he was involved in the development of the nightclub concept Pangaea and later worked in the Middle East hospitality sector, including the launch of the Japanese restaurant OKKU in Dubai.[2][3][5]
Thesleff was born in Finland and spent parts of his childhood in Sweden and England.[2][3] His father worked in the food industry and his family frequently hosted large social gatherings, which Thesleff has cited as an early influence on his interest in hospitality.[2][6]
He attended boarding school in England, including TASIS England in Surrey, before studying economics at Illinois State University in the United States.[2][6]
After university, Thesleff worked in businesses connected to his family's food interests before moving into hospitality and nightlife.[2]
In the early 2000s he became involved with the development of Pangaea, a nightclub concept that operated in New York, London and Marbella.[2][3][5] The London venue became known as a destination for celebrities, members of the British social scene and international visitors.[2][7]
In 2009, Thesleff relocated to Dubai, where he worked in the hospitality sector and helped launch the Japanese restaurant OKKU.[2][3] [5] During more than a decade in the Middle East, he was involved in the development and operation of hospitality concepts across the region.[2][5]
Thesleff returned to London in 2018 and founded Thesleff Group.[2][4][5]
In 2021, the group opened Los Mochis in Notting Hill, a restaurant combining Japanese and Mexican culinary influences.[4][3][5] Bloomberg later reported that the restaurant introduced private healthcare coverage for employees as part of its recruitment and retention strategy during a period of staffing shortages in the hospitality industry.[5]
The company subsequently expanded with additional openings including Los Mochis London City, Viajante87, LUNA Omakase and JUNO Omakase.[2][4][8] In 2023, Thesleff acquired Sale e Pepe, a long-established Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge, which reopened following refurbishment. He later expanded the brand through the launch of Sale e Pepe Mare at The Langham, London.
By 2025, Thesleff Group reported annual turnover of £37.8 million and employed approximately 600 staff.[2]
Thesleff has commented publicly on issues affecting the hospitality industry, including taxation, labour shortages, tourism and investment in London hospitality.[2][4][8]
Thesleff has been included in The Standard's annual list of people shaping London's food and restaurant scene,[9] and in Caterer Middle East's Power 50 list of influential figures in the food and beverage industry in the Middle East in 2013.[10]
