Hermann Press (also known as Hermann Press Corporation) is an American academic publisher based in New York City, established in 2025 as the American branch of the Paris-based Éditions Hermann. The press publishes books across the humanities, sciences, social sciences, philosophy, mathematics, literary criticism, and the arts. It operates two imprints: Hermann Academic Press, devoted to scholarly monographs and research works, and Hermann Editions, focused on shorter works for a general intellectual readership, including a series of art books.
Background: Éditions Hermann
Éditions Hermann was founded in Paris in 1876 at 6 rue de la Sorbonne by Arthur Hermann (1839–1929), a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and professor of mathematics. The press rapidly established itself by publishing works by leading mathematicians and physicists of the era, including Élie Cartan, the Curies, Jacques Hadamard, and Henri Poincaré.
In 1927, Arthur Hermann's son-in-law Enrique Freymann (1888–1954) took over the direction of the press. A friend of Diego Rivera and an art collector, Freymann launched the influential Actualités scientifiques et industrielles series, supported by Nobel laureate Louis de Broglie, which published landmark works by figures including Albert Einstein, Jean-Paul Sartre, Rudolf Carnap, Norbert Wiener, and Jacques Monod.
Freymann's most consequential decision was agreeing to publish the Éléments de mathématique, the foundational treatise of the pseudonymous mathematical collective Nicolas Bourbaki, begun in the 1930s. The publication involved significant financial risk but proved decisive for modern mathematics. As mathematician André Weil later recalled: Freymann believed in Bourbaki and encouraged the group when others were skeptical. During the German Occupation, Freymann continued to display and sell works by Jewish authors — including writings by Einstein and Laurent Schwartz's doctoral thesis — when such publications were banned.
In 1956, Pierre Berès (1913–2008), a prominent Parisian bookseller and publisher, acquired Éditions Hermann from Freymann's heirs. Berès commissioned typographer Adrian Frutiger to redesign the house's visual identity, including the logo and the distinctive silver façade of the rue de la Sorbonne salesroom. He broadened the editorial program while maintaining its scientific rigor, summing up his approach as publishing works in "science and the arts." Under his direction, Hermann published across all disciplines, including philosophy, art history, medicine, and mathematics, with contributions from Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Henri Cartan, Jean-Pierre Serre, and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, among many others. In 1960, with art historian André Chastel, Berès founded the art journal Art de France, to which Yves Bonnefoy, Francis Ponge, Philippe Sollers, and Pierre Soulages contributed.
In 2006, Arthur Cohen, formerly the press's editorial director, became Chairman and CEO of Éditions Hermann. Under his leadership, the press expanded its program significantly, launching new collections in music and musicology, psychoanalysis, social sciences, philosophy, digital culture, and history of science, while continuing to publish reference works in mathematics and the sciences.
In 2024, Éditions Hermann announced its decision to establish a U.S. subsidiary in New York, as part of a transatlantic expansion strategy.

Hermann Press Corporation was incorporated in New York City in 2025, as part of Éditions Hermann's 150th-anniversary development strategy. Its creation was announced as an effort to build an English-language publishing program serving both scholarly and general readers, and to circulate works across disciplinary and linguistic boundaries.
