FreeHosts is a community-curated web directory and comparison site for no-cost web hosting. Rather than hosting content itself, FreeHosts lists, filters, and reviews third-party free hosting providers for websites, applications, bots, and databases.[1][2] The site is owned by Shadow Gaming and operated at freehosts.eu, having previously used the domains freehosts.space, freehosts.pro, and, before that, freehosts.quitprojects.pro.[1][3][4]
History
FreeHosts began as a Discord server and an informal list of free hosting options, originally reachable under the domain freehosts.quitprojects.pro, shared among a small group of friends to help one another find hosting for hobby projects.[5][4] As more users discovered the list and contributed their own suggestions and reviews, an informal community formed around it, which later became the basis for a dedicated directory website.[5]
The project subsequently moved to freehosts.pro, then to freehosts.space,[4] before adopting its current domain, freehosts.eu, following a further domain change.[1] The organization's copyright notices date its operation to 2024.[1][2] Its GitHub organization, freehostsofficial, maintains an archived repository, Website-Old, containing an earlier static HTML version of the site, which was later replaced by the current Next.js-based site at freehosts.eu.[3]
Features
FreeHosts organizes listed providers into four categories:
- Website hosting – static sites, portfolios, blogs, and landing pages
- Application hosting – backend apps and APIs in Node.js, Python, PHP, Ruby, and similar languages
- Bot hosting – Discord, Telegram, and other automation bots
- Database hosting – free PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, and Redis instances[1]
The site's core features include curated and "verified" provider listings, staff-selected picks, community-submitted reviews, and a comparison tool that filters providers by resource limits (CPU, RAM, storage), supported programming language, and intended use.[1][2] Registered users may maintain a personal saved list of providers.[2] New hosts can be proposed through a web submission form or a dedicated channel on the project's Discord server.[5] The site also publishes a supplementary "Other Free Hosts" listings page and submission rules for providers seeking to be listed.[1]
The directory is free to use, with no registration required to browse, and the site states it will not introduce paywalls or premium tiers.[5]
Technology
The current freehosts.eu site is built with Next.js, a React framework, and uses a dark navy color scheme with a terminal-inspired interface, including a mock command-line prompt on its homepage.[1] Its predecessor was a static HTML site, preserved in an archived GitHub repository.[3]
Development is coordinated through the freehostsofficial GitHub organization, which as of 2026 maintains four public repositories: .github (the organization's profile repository), Website-Old (the archived earlier site, written in HTML and licensed under the MIT License), Panel-Bot (a JavaScript-based Discord bot used for community and panel management), and blog (a TypeScript-based blog subsystem).[3]
Reception
As of August 2026, FreeHosts reports approximately 706 members in its Discord community and more than 137 listed hosting providers.[1][a] The project also maintains accounts on X, as @freehosts_,[1][6] and Instagram, as @freehosts.[1]
FreeHosts holds a Trustpilot profile; following its move to freehosts.eu, an update to the profile's associated domain has been requested with Trustpilot.[7] Prior to the move, the profile (registered under freehosts.space) carried a small number of reviews and was described by Trustpilot as belonging to a community-driven directory maintained by volunteers.[8] FreeHosts is also listed on the software discovery site AlternativeTo, which categorizes it under the properties "privacy focused" and "lightweight," with features including "ad-free," "dark mode," and "no registration required."[9]
