Advanced Placement (AP) Cybersecurity (also known as AP Cyber or AP Cysec) is a course and examination offered by the College Board to high school students. The AP Cybersecurity course is structured to be equivalent to a one-semester college introductory course in cybersecurity. AP Cybersecurity would first launch in the 2026-2027 school year.

It is a part of the AP Career Kickstart™ initiative, meaning that if you achieve a qualifying score on the AP Cybersecurity exam, you will be able to earn an employer-endorsed credential in cybersecurity while also earning college credit.

Credential

AP Cybersecurity is a part of the AP Career Kickstart™ initiative, allowing students to earn an employer-endorsed credential in cybersecurity. This credential certifies skills in evaluating and recommending security measures for networks, devices, and data. This credential also aligns with other certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST): Cybersecurity. This credential is able to be stacked with the AP Networking Credential, which is also a part of the AP Career Kickstart™ initiative.[2]

Prerequisites

AP Cybersecurity has no specific prerequisites, making it accessible to all students. This foundational course is [1]strategically designed to align with a variety of Programs of Study within the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Digital Technology Pathways, ensuring that students gain essential skills for their future careers.

Exam

The course culminates in an exam which is divided into two major sections (multiple-choice questions and free response questions).

  • Section I: Multiple Choice [1 hour and 20 minutes for 60 multiple-choice questions]
  • Section II: Free-Response [50 minutes for 1 problem]
