Serena Williams defeated Jennifer Capriati in the final, 7–5, 7–6(7–4) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Miami Open. Serena became the second player in the Open Era, after Steffi Graf, to defeat the world's top-three ranked players at the same event; defeating world No. 3 Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals, No. 2 Venus Williams in the semifinals, and No. 1 Capriati in the final. Serena did not lose a set during the tournament.[1]
