Το εθνόσημο του Ελ Σαλβαδόρ χρησιμοποιείται με την παρούσα μορφή από τις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου 1912. Στο κέντρο έχει ένα τρίγωνο, μέσα στο οποίο ξεπροβάλλουν από τη θάλασσα πέντε ηφαίστεια, τα οποία συμβολίζουν τα πέντε κράτη μέλη των Ηνωμένων Επαρχιών της Κεντρικής Αμερικής. Επάνω από τις κορυφές εικονίζεται ένας Φρυγικός σκούφος πάνω σε ένα πάσσαλο με έναν χρυσό ήλιο και την ημερομηνία 15 Σεπτεμβρίου 1821, ημέρα ανεξαρτησίας του Ελ Σαλβαδόρ. Από επάνω βρίσκεται ένα ουράνιο τόξο. Πίσω από το εθνόσημο υπάρχουν υψωμένες πέντε σημαίες του Ελ Σαλβαδόρ. Κάτω από αυτές, υπάρχει μια περγαμηνή, που αναγράφει το εθνικό ρητό της χώρας: «DIOS UNION LIBERTAD» (στα ισπανικά, «Θεός, Ένωση, Ελευθερία». Όλα αυτά περιβάλλονται από μια γιρλάντα από δάφνες, οι οποίες είναι μεταξύ τους δεμένες κάτω από την εθνική σημαία. Η γιρλάντα χωρίζεται σε 14 διαφορετικά μέρη, τα οποία συμβολίζουν τα 14 διαμερίσματα (Departamentos), τις διοικητικές υποδιαιρέσεις της χώρας. Όλα αυτά περιβάλλονται από χρυσά γράμματα, τα οποία σχηματίζουν τις ισπανικές λέξεις REPÚBLICA DE EL SALVADOR EN LA AMÉRICA CENTRAL (Δημοκρατία του Ελ Σαλβαδόρ στην Κεντρική Αμερική).
