Σημαία της αποικιακής Νυασαλάνδης που χρησιμοποιήθηκε πριν την ανεξαρτησία

Η σημαία του Μαλάουι καθιερώθηκε στις 6 Ιουλίου 1964. Ο ανατέλλων ήλιος εκπροσωπεί την ελπίδα και την ελευθερία για την ήπειρο της Αφρικής (την περίοδο δημιουργίας της σημαίας, οι περισσότερες αφρικανικές χώρες είχαν μόλις κερδίσει την ανεξαρτησία τους). Το πράσινο εκπροσωπεί τη φύση, το κόκκινο είναι για το αίμα που έχυσαν οι μάρτυρες για την ελευθερία, ενώ το μαύρο συμβολίζει τον πληθυσμό της χώρας.

Η αλλαγή της σημαίας έγινε στις 29 Ιουλίου 2010. Καθιερώθηκε έπειτα από πρόταση της κυβέρνησης της χώρας. Οι λωρίδες μεταβλήθηκαν σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη σημαία ούτως ώστε να αρμόζει στη σημαία με τα παναφρικανικά χρώματα. Συνακόλουθα, η κόκκινη λωρίδα τοποθετήθηκε στην κορυφή, η μαύρη λωρίδα στη μέση και η πράσινη στο κάτω μέρος. Ο ανατέλλων ήλιος που υπήρχε στην προηγούμενη σημαία άλλαξε σε έναν λευκό ήλιο που τοποθετήθηκε στο κέντρο και συμβολίζει την οικονομική πρόοδο που έχει συντελεστεί στο Μαλάουι από την εποχή της ανεξαρτησίας.[1] Το Ενωμένο Δημοκρατικό Μέτωπο της Αντιπολίτευσης προσέβαλε την απόφαση για αλλαγή της σημαίας μέσω της δικαστικής οδού.[2] Η απόφαση για την αλλαγή της σημαίας λήφθηκε από τον πρόεδρο Μπίνγκου γουά Μουταρίκα.[3]

2012–σήμερα

Στις 28 Μαΐου 2012, επί προεδρίας της Τζόις Μπάντα, το Κοινοβούλιο αποφάσισε να επαναφέρει τη σημαία της ανεξαρτησίας.[4][5] Η επαναφορά τέθηκε σε εφαρμογή με την υπογραφή Προεδρικού Διατάγματος.[6]
