Σε ένα οργανωμένο αθλητικό πρωτάθλημα, μια τυπική αγωνιστική περίοδος είναι το χρονικό διάστημα κατά το οποίο διεξάγονται αγώνες πρωταθλήματος. Σε ορισμένα πρωταθλήματα, μία αγωνιστική περίοδος ξεκινά στην αρχή ενός έτους και λήγει στο τέλος του ίδιου έτους, ενώ σε άλλα πρωταθλήματα, η αγωνιστική περίοδος ξεκινά στα μισά ενός έτους και λήγει στα μισά του αμέσως επόμενου έτους. Επίσης, σε κάποια πρωταθλήματα, η αγωνιστική περίοδος προβλέπεται να διακόπτεται για ορισμένο διάστημα, κυρίως λόγω καιρικών συνθηκών.

Μία αγωνιστική περίοδος μπορεί να χωριστεί σε αρκετά διαφορετικά μέρη, όπως μια σειρά από εκθεσιακά παιχνίδια (preseason) που διεξάγονται για εκπαιδευτικούς σκοπούς, η κανονική περίοδος (regular season) κατά την οποία διεξάγονται εντός και εκτός έδρας αγώνες,^[1] οι αγώνες κατάταξης (playoffs) οι οποίοι σε ορισμένες διοργανώσεις καθορίζουν την πρωταθλήτρια ομάδα, όπως και το διάστημα κατά το οποίο δεν υπάρχει επίσημη διοργάνωση (offseason).
