Ο Άγιος Στέφανος είναι οικισμός της τοπικής κοινότητας Φρεγκαίνης, της δημοτικής ενότητας (τέως δήμου) Λυρκείας, του δήμου Άργους - Μυκηνών, της περιφερειακής ενότητας (τέως νομού) Αργολίδας, στην περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου, σύμφωνα με το πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης.[2][3] Πριν το σχέδιο Καποδίστριας και το πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης, ανήκε στην επαρχία Άργους του νομού Αργολίδος, στο γεωγραφικό διαμέρισμα Πελοποννήσου.[4]

Γεωγραφία

Ο Άγιος Στέφανος είναι ημιορεινός οικισμός στο νοτιοδυτικό τμήμα του νομού Αργολίδας. Βρίσκεται στις βόρειες απολήξεις της κορυφής «Μεγαβούνι» (700 μ.) και κοντά στον ποταμό Ξεριά, δυτικά του Άργους και σε μέσο σταθμικό υψόμετρο 280. Απέχει 23 χλμ. περίπου ΒΔ. του Ναυπλίου.[4][5][6][7]

Διοικητικές μεταβολές μέχρι τον «Καλλικράτη»

Ο οικισμός αναγνωρίστηκε το 1928 και προσαρτήθηκε στην κοινότητα Κρυονερίου του τέως νομού Αργολίδος & Κορινθίας. Το 1946 αποσπάστηκε από την κοινότητα Κρυονερίου προσαρτήθηκε στην κοινότητα Φρεγκαίνης. Το 1949 υπήχθη στον νομό Αργολίδος. Με το ΦΕΚ 244Α - 04/12/1997 ο οικισμός αποσπάστηκε από την κοινότητα Φρεγκαίνης και προσαρτήθηκε στον δήμο Λυρκείας. Με το ΦΕΚ 87Α - 07/06/2010 ο οικισμός αποσπάστηκε από τον δήμο Λυρκείας και προσαρτήθηκε στον δήμο Άργους-Μυκηνών.[3]
