CandidatusNanopusillus ist eine Kandidaten-Gattung im PhylumNanoarchaeota, zu der mehrere verschiedene Arten (Spezies) gehören.[4]
Eine davon, „Ca. Nanopusillus massiliensis“ ist das erste co-isolierte Mitglied der Nanoarchaeota mit menschlichem Ursprungs. Eine weitere Art innerhalb dieser Gattung ist „Ca. Nanopusillus acidilobi“. Von dieser besonderen Art weiß man, dass sie anaerob, hyperthermophil und acidophil ist und am besten in stark sauren und heißen Umgebungen gedeiht (Optimum bei 82 °C und pH-Wert von 3,6). „Ca. Nanopusillus acidilobi“ wurde (insbesondere) in heißen Quellen im Yellowstone-Nationalpark gefunden und lebt epibiontisch auf der Oberfläche von anderen Archaeen als Wirt (nämlich Acidilobus sp. 7A).[5]

Spezies „Ca. Nanopusillus phoceensis“ Hassaniet al. 2024 bzw. 2023(L)[10] – aus einer menschlichen Stuhlprobe, steht im engen Kontakt mit Methanobrevibacter smithii.[10]

Die Zuordnung einzelner Stämme (bzw. Isolate oder MAGs) zu den Spezies ist noch in der Diskussion, die GTDB betrachtet offenbar die ganze Gattung als ein Synonym von Nanobdella.[13]
Etymologie
Der Gattungsname Nanopusillus ist neulateinisch und leitet sich ab von altgriechischνᾶνοςnânos, deutsch ‚Zwerg‘ und lateinischpusillus‚sehr klein‘; der Name verweist somit auf sehr kleine Mitglieder der Archaeen bzw. Nanoarchaeota.[3]
Das Art-Epithetonacidilobi ist Genitiv und verweist auf die Gattung Acidilobus, auf der die Typusart wächst und in deren Abhängigkeit sie steht.
Das Art-Epitheton massiliensis bedeutet „von Marseille“, wo man diese Art entdeckt hat („Massilia“ ist der alte römische Name von Marseille).
