Acidilobus aceticus (mit Referenzstamm 1904ᵀ) ist der erste gefundene Vertreter der Gattung. Der Stamm wurde, wie von Maria Prokofeva et al. im Jahr 2000 veröffentlicht, aus den sauer-heißen Quellen des Vulkans Mutnowski auf der Halbinsel Kamtschatka isoliert.
Es handelt sich um einen thermoacidophilen Organismus, die anaerob auf Stärke wachsen kann.
Seine Zellen sind mehr oder weniger regelmäßige Kokkenform mit einem Durchmesser von 1–2 µm. Sie sind nicht beweglich (motil); ihre Zellhülle besteht aus einer Schicht (Layer) mit Untereinheiten.
A. aceticus wächst als ein Hyperthermophiler im Temperaturbereich von 60–92 °C (optimal bei 85 °C), und als ein Acidophiler in einem pH-Bereich von 2,0–6,0 (optimal bei 3,8). Die Spezies ist obligat anaerob; sie fermentiert Stärke und bildet dabei als HauptstoffwechselproduktAcetat. Als weitere Wachstums-Substrate wurden Hefeextrakt, Rindfleischextrakt und Sojaextrakt bestätigt.[6]

Der Gattungsname Acidilobus kommt vom lateinischen Adjektiv acidus für „sauer“ und dem latinisierten Nomen lobus „Lappen“ (von gleichbedeutend altgriechischλοβόςlobós), bezeichnet somit einen „sauren Lappen“.[3]
Das Art-Epithetonaceticus kommt von lateinisch acetum „Essig“; Acidilobus aceticus ist also ein „essigsaurer Lappen“.
Das Art-Epitheton saccharovorans kommt von altgriechisch σάκχαρονsákcharon „Zucker“ und lateinisch vorans „fressend“; saccharovorans meint daher „zuckerfressend“.
Das Art-Epitheton sulfurireducens kommt von lateinisch sulfur „Schwefel“ und reducens „reduzierend“; sulfurireducens bedeutet also „Schwefel-reduzierend“.
Das mögliche Art-Epitheton nanophilum kommt von altgriechisch νάνοςnános „Zwerg“ und latinisiert philum von altgriechisch φίλοςphilos „lieb, liebend, geliebt“ oder substantiviert „Freund“; die Bezeichnung unterstellt daher, dass diese Spezies einen Nutzen von ihren kleinen Nanobdellota-Epibionten haben könnte.
