Er i'r term gael ei ddefnyddio yn wreiddiol i gyfeirio at grwpiau crefyddol, mae bellach yn cyfeirio at unrhyw gorff sy'n torri i ffwrdd o gorff mwy er mwyn dilyn set gwahanol o reolau ac egwyddorion.

Mewn cyd-destun Indiaidd, mae sect yn cyfeirio at draddodiad cyfundrefnol.

Mae'r gair sect yn tarddu o'r enw Lladin secta (ffurf ar y ferf sequi, i ddilyn[1]), sy'n golygu "ffordd, heol", ac yn ffigurol ffordd, modd neu ddull penodol. Felly, yn drawsenwol, disgyblaeth neu ysgol o feddwl sydd wedi'i diffinio gan set o ddulliau neu athrawiaethau.
