Grŵp o bersonau yw ystyr y gair pobl.[1] Ym maes anthropoleg, grŵp cymdeithasol o fodau dynol sy'n rhannu nodweddion sydd yn aml yn bod y tu hwnt i ffiniau gwleidyddol yw pobl, sy'n debyg i hil, grŵp ethno-ieithyddol, grŵp ethnogrefyddol neu gasgliad o genhedloedd neu lwythau, er enghraifft y Celtiaid, y Slafiaid, a'r Arabiaid.[2]

Y gair

Y gair Lladin populus yw gwraidd y gair Cymraeg. "Pobloedd" yw ffurf luosog arferol y gair, ond ceir hefyd "poblau", "poblydd", a "pobledd". Enw benywaidd, ond yn eithriadol yn wrywaidd, yw "pobl", a gall hefyd fod yn ffurf luosog ynddi'i hun. Ceir treiglad meddal i'r ffurf luosog ar ôl y fannod, ac i ansoddair sy'n ei dilyn.[1][3]
