Urdd o naw teulu ydy'r Piciformes, sy'n air Lladin, gwyddonol. Enw Cymraeg yr Urdd hon ydy'r Urdd y Cnocellod. Y teulu enwocaf yw'r Picidae, sy'n cynnwys y Gnocell Werdd a'r Gnocell Fraith Fwyaf.
Ceir 67 genera (lluosog genws) gydag oddeutu 400 rhywogaeth, gyda theulu'r Picidae yn hanner y rheiny.
Pryfaid yw eu prif fwyd er bod y Capitonidae a'r Twcaniaid yn unigryw ymhlith adar gan eu bod yn medru treulio cŵyr gwenyn. Mae ganddynt bron i gyd draed fel parotiaid, dau fys yn ôl a dau ymlaen. Mae hyn yn rhoiddynt y gallu i afael mewn canghennau a boncyffion y coed.[1]
