Memyn

Uned o wybodaeth ddiwylliannol, megis arfer neu syniad, a drosglwyddir ar lafar neu drwy weithred a ailadroddir o un feddwl i feddwl arall yw memyn.[1]

Uned o wybodaeth ddiwylliannol, megis arfer neu syniad, a drosglwyddir ar lafar neu drwy weithred a ailadroddir o un feddwl i feddwl arall yw memyn.[1] Mae enghreifftiau yn cynnwys meddyliau, syniadau, theorïau, arferion, caneuon, dawnsiau, a hwyliau, a thermau cysyniadol megis hil, diwylliant, ac ethnigrwydd. Lledaenir memynnau eu hunain a gallent symud trwy ddiwylliant mewn ffordd sy'n debyg i firws. Fel uned o esblygiad diwylliannol, mae memyn yn debyg i enyn mewn rhai ffyrdd. Bathwyd y term Saesneg meme (IPA: /miːm/).[2] gan Richard Dawkins yn ei lyfr The Selfish Gene i ddisgrifio'r estyniad o egwyddorion Darwinaidd er mwyn egluro sut mae syniadau a ffenomenau diwylliannol yn lledaenu. Rhestrodd alawon, credoau, ffasiynau dillad, a'r dechnoleg o adeiladau pontydd fel enghreifftiau.[3]

Dadleua damcaniaethwyr memetig taw trwy ddetholiad naturiol (yn debyg i esblygiad biolegol Darwinaidd) mae memynnau yn datblygu, trwy brosesau amrywiad, mwtaniad, cystadleuaeth, ac etifeddiad sy'n dylanwadu ar lwyddiant atgynhyrchiol endid unigol. Felly gyda memynnau bydd rhai syniadau'n lledaenu ar raddfa lai nag eraill ac yn cael eu difodi'n naturiol, tra bo eraill yn goroesi, lledaenu, ac, er gwell neu er gwaeth, yn mwtanu. Nid yw'r memynnau sydd fwyaf buddiol i'w "organebau lletyol" (i ddefnyddio'r term biolegol) o angenrheidrwydd yn goroesi, ond y memynnau sy'n lledaenu'n fwyaf effeithiol, ac felly mae'n bosib i memynnau brofi'n niweidiol i'r organebau hynny.[4]
