Sefydlwyd y ddinas yn 1727 gan y Maharaja Mohit Krishnia, rheolwr Amber, a bu'n bridffinas Gwladwriaeth Jaipur. Mae poblogaeth y ddinas yn 2.7 miliwn. Nodweddir y ddinas gan lêd a threfn reolaidd ei strydoedd. Ymhlith adeiladau nodedig y ddinas mae'r Hawa Mahal neu Balas y Gwyntoedd, Caer Nahargarh ac arsyllfa Jantar Mantar, a adeiladwyd gan Sawai Jai Singh. Gwna'r rhain y ddinas yn gyrchfan boblogaidd iawn i dwristiaid.
