Parc cyhoeddus mawr ar lan orllewinol Afon Taf yng Nglan'rafon, Caerdydd, yw Gerddi Sophia. Cynhelir gemau criced prawf rhyngwladol a gemau criced sirol yma yn Stadiwm SWALEC, cartref Clwb Criced Morgannwg.[1]

Mae'r parc wedi'i leoli yn agos at ganol dinas Caerdydd ac mae wrth ymyl Parc Bute a Chaeau Pontcanna, sy'n rhan o 'ysgyfaint gwyrdd' y ddinas. Mae Gerddi Sophia wedi'i gysylltu â Pharc Bute gan bont droed y Mileniwm dros Afon Taf (1999). Yn ogystal â Maes Criced Sir Forgannwg, mae Gerddi Sophia yn gartref i Canolfan Chwaraeon Chwaraeon Cymru, tafarn o'r enw Bragdy a Chegin (Y Mochyn Du gynt), maes gwersylla, ardal arddangos a pharc ceir a bysiau, a hen dŷ'r warden.[2]

Hanes

Enwyd y parc ar ôl Sophia Crichton-Stuart, Ardalyddes Bute, merch Ardalydd 1af Hastings a gwraig i 2il Ardalydd Bute. Roedd yr Arglwyddes Sophia yn awyddus i ddarparu man agored ar gyfer hamdden ar gyfer tref a oedd yn brysur ehangu ar ddiwedd y 19g; roedd gan ei gŵr ran fawr yn y datblygiad hwnnw. Gosodwyd y gerddi gan y pensaer Alexander Roos ar safle Fferm Plasturton yn 1854. Fe'u hagorwyd i'r cyhoedd gan yr Arglwyddes Sophia yn 1858, i wneud iawn am gau tiroedd Castell Caerdydd.[3] Estynnwyd y parc tua'r gogledd gan 28 erw o gwmpas y flwyddyn 1879.[4] Prynwyd y parc gan Gyngor Dinas Caerdydd – Corfforaeth Caerdydd bryd hynny – oddi wrth 5ed Ardalydd Bute yn 1947.[5]

Cynhaliwyd Sioe Ceffylau Caerdydd yn y parc ar ddiwedd y 19g a dechrau'r 20g. Yn 1891 roedd y parc yn gartref i Sioe Gorllewin Gwyllt Buffalo Bill yn ystod ei daith o amgylch trefi ynysoedd Prydain.[6][7]

Adeiladwyd Pafiliwn Gerddi Sophia yn 1951 ar gyfer Gŵyl Prydain, ac fe'i defnyddiwyd fel lleoliad cyngerdd nes iddo ddymchwel dan eira trwm ym 1982.[8][9]
