Ni wyddir llawer am ei fywyd, ond roedd yn gweithio yn ninas Alexandria yn yr Aifft, yn ôl pob tebyg yn ystod teyrnasiad Ptolemi I Soter (323 CC – 283 CC). Ymddengys iddo weithio yn Llyfrgell Alexandria, ac efallai iddo astudio yn Academi Platon yn Athen.

Ei lyfr Yr Elfennau yw'r llyfr mwyaf llwyddiannus yn hanes mathemateg. Yn y llyfr yma, datblygodd egwyddorion geometreg, a rhoddir y teitl "tad geometreg" i Euclid weithiau.
