Ei hyd yw tua 30 km (19 milltir) a'i led yn amrywio o 0.6 i 4 km (0.4-2.5 milltir). Saif dinas hynafol Istanbwl (Caergystennin gynt) ar ei lannau. Saif dwy bont ar draws y culfor yn Istanbwl. Mae pont Bosphorus (cwblhawyd yn 1973) yn 1074 m o hyd a phont Ratih Sultan Mehmet (cwblhawyd yn 1988) yn 1090 m o hyd ac yn un o bontydd mwyaf Ewrop ac Asia.
