Noctiluca

La noctiluca[1] (Noctiluca scintillans) és una espècie de dinoflagel·lat de l'ordre de les noctilucals (Noctilucales) de vida lliure i heteròtrofa.

La noctiluca[1] (Noctiluca scintillans) és una espècie de dinoflagel·lat de l'ordre de les noctilucals (Noctilucales) de vida lliure i heteròtrofa. Emet bioluminescència quan és pertorbat. Aquesta bioluminescència, la produeix una reacció química amb la substància anomenada luciferina. Es tracta de l'única espècie del gènere Noctiluca.

La noctiluca és un organisme heteròtrof i no fotosintètic que menja plàncton (diatomees, altres dinoflagel·lats, ous de peix i bacteris) mitjançant fagocitosi. Té un simbiont, Pedinomonas noctilucae.[2]

Distribució

Té distribució cosmopolita.

Mida

És un organisme unicel·lular gran en forma d'esfera, que fa de 200 a 2.000 µm de diàmetre.
