Kanadski štit, često nazivan i Laurentianski plato, je veliko područje potkovičastog oblika formirano od prekambrijskih magmatskih i metamorfnih stijena tj. geološkog štita koji je formirao davno geološke jezgro sjevernoameričkog kontinenta prekriveno tankim slojem zemlje.[1] Područje je uglavnom sastavljeno od eruptivnih stijena koje su nastale tokom dugog aktivnog vulkanskog perioda.

Prostire se u istočnoj i centralnoj Kanadi i proteže sjeverno od Velikih jezera do Arktičkog okeana zauzimajući više od polovine teritorije Kanade. Osim toga, štit se prostire i južno dopirući do najsjevernijih dijelova SAD-a. Područje je vrlo rijetko naseljeno sa oskudnom industrijom ali s vrlo rasprostranjenim rudarstvom.[2]

Geografija

Kanadski štit se prema fiziografskoj podjeli sastoji od pet manjih fiziografskih dijelova. Nastao je prije 3,6 milijardi godina. Nekada je ova štit imao nazubljene vrhove, koji su bili veće visine od bilo kojih današnjih planina, ali djelovanje erozije tokom miliona godina su izmijenilo izgled ovog područja u danjašnje koje je karakteristično po brdovitom reljefu s vrhovima prosječne visine između 300 i 610 metara i nekoliko niskih planina uključujući Torngat i masiv Laurentian.
