Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MRO — шматфункцыянальная аўтаматычная міжпланетная станцыя (АМС) НАСА, прызначаная для даследавання Марса. Апарат пабудаваны кампаніяй Lockheed Martin пад кіраўніцтвам Лабараторыі рэактыўнага руху, на праект было выдаткавана 720 млн дол. Кіруе апаратам Лабараторыя рэактыўнага руху (Каліфарнійскі тэхналагічны інстытут); навуковым бокам місіі кіруе НАСА (Вашынгтон, акруга Калумбія).

Запушчаны 12 жніўня 2005 года з касмадрома на мысе Канаверал з дапамогай ракеты-носьбіта Атлас V. Дасягнуўшы Марса 10 сакавіка 2006 года, пачаў серыю манеўраў для выхаду на патрэбную арбіту, пры дапамозе т.зв. аэрадынамічнага тармажэння (тармажэнне ў верхніх слаях атмасферы планеты дазваляе значна зэканоміць паліва). Арбітальныя манеўры і розныя праверкі і каліброўка абсталявання скончыліся ў лістападзе 2006 года, пасля чаго апарат прыступіў да працы.

Пасля выхаду на арбіту Марса MRO далучыўся да пяці касмічных апаратаў, якія актыўна функцыянуюць і ў той момант знаходзіліся або на арбіце, або на паверхні планеты: спадарожнікаў Mars Global Surveyor, Марс Адысей і Марс-экспрэс, і марсаходаў Spirit і Opportunity — такім чынам, быў усталяваны рэкорд па колькасці актыўных касмічных апаратаў, размешчаных на арбіце і паверхні Марса.

MRO змяшчае цэлы шэраг навуковых прыбораў, такіх як камеры, спектрометры, радары, якія выкарыстоўваюцца для аналізу рэльефу, стратыграфіі, мінералаў і лёду на Марсе. Даследаванні надвор’я і паверхні Марса, пошук магчымых месцаў пасадкі і новая тэлекамунікацыйная сістэма адкрываюць шлях для будучых касмічных апаратаў. Тэлекамунікацыйная сістэма MRO перадае на Зямлю даных больш, чым усе папярэднія міжпланетныя апараты разам узятыя, і можа служыць у якасці магутнага арбітальнага рэтранслятара для іншых даследчых праграм[2] .
