Qriqorian təqvimində Yeni il günü — təqvim ilinin ilk günü olan 1 yanvarda qeyd olunan bayram. Əksər günəş təqvimləri (Qriqorian və Yulian kimi) ili müntəzəm olaraq şimal qış gündönümündə və ya yaxınlığında başlayır, ay-günəş və ya ay təqvimini müşahidə edən mədəniyyətlər isə Ay Yeni ilini günəş ilinə nisbətən daha az sabit nöqtələrdə qeyd edirlər.

Xristianlıqdan əvvəlki Romada Yulian təqvimi ilə bu gün qapılar və başlanğıclar tanrısı Yanusa həsr olunurdu, yanvar da onun üçün adlandırılır. Roma dövründən XVIII əsrin ortalarına qədər yeni il müxtəlif mərhələlərdə və xristian Avropasının müxtəlif yerlərində dekabrən 25-də qeyd olunurdu.[1][2][3]

İndiki vaxtda əksər ölkələr öz mülki təqvimi kimi Qriqorian təqvimini istifadə edir, həmin təqvimə görə yanvar ayının 1-i dünyada ən çox qeyd olunan dövlət bayramlarından biridir və hər saat qurşağında yeni il başlayarkən Yeni il ərəfəsindən sonra gecə yarısı atəşfəşanlığı ilə müşahidə edilir. Digər qlobal Yeni il ənənələrinə Yeni il qərarları qəbul etmək və dostlara, yaxınlara və ailəyə zəng etmək daxildir.[4]
