Tapanuli (Surat Batak: ᯖᯇᯉᯮᯞᯪ) adalah sebuah wilayah yang meliputi pesisir pantai barat Sumatera Utara hingga pesisir Danau Toba. Tapanuli berasal dari frasa "tapian nauli" yang berarti "perairan tempat permandian yang indah". Tapanuli dibatasi oleh dataran Aceh Tenggara dan Pegunungan Bukit Barisan sehingga memisahkannya dari pesisir timur Sumatera Utara yang biasa disebut sebagai Sumatera Timur.

Pada masa Hindia Belanda, Tapanuli termasuk ke dalam wilayah administrasi Residentie Tapanoeli (bahasa Indonesia: Keresidenan Tapanuli). Kendaraan bermotor di Tapanuli diberi kode nomor polisi BB, sedangkan daerah di pesisir timur Sumatera Utara diberi kode nomor polisi BK.

Beberapa daerah administrasi Sumatera Utara yang menggunakan nama Tapanuli adalah:

  1. Kabupaten Tapanuli Utara
  2. Kabupaten Tapanuli Tengah
  3. Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan
