Sinema Thailand bermula dari hari-hari awal pembuatan film, saat kunjungan tahun 1897 Raja Chulalongkorn ke Bern, Swiss direkam oleh François-Henri Lavancy-Clarke. Film tersebut kemudian dibawa ke Bangkok, dimana film tersebut dipamerkan. Film tersebut menimbulkan minat lebih dalam perfilman oleh Keluarga Kerjaaan Thai dan pengusaha lokal, yang membawa alat pembuatan film dan mulai memamerkan film-film asing.
