Selam skuba adalah penggunaan alat pernapasan bebas untuk berada bawah air dalam waktu lama untuk penyelaman rekreasi dan penyelaman profesional. Biasanya penyelam berenang di bawah air, tetapi berjalan dan penggunaan kendaraan propulsi penyelam juga dimungkinkan. Kata SCUBA merupakan sebuah akronim untuk "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus", tetapi telah diterima sebagai kata yang menunjuk ke peralatan scuba.

Dua jenis peralatan scuba adalah "sirkuit-terbuka" Aqua-lung, dikembangkan oleh Jacques Cousteau dan "sirkuit-tertutup" rebreather.

Jarak pandang

Di dalam dunia selam scuba (scuba diving) jarak pandang adalah satuan kejernihan air untuk kegiatan menyelam. Biasanya dinyatakan dalam satuan jarak seperti meter dan feet. Semakin jauh jarak pandang kita sewaktu menyelam, air semakin jernih semakin mudah untuk melihat objek selam, sebaliknya semakin pendek jarak pandang, maka kita akan mengalami kesulitan dalam melakukan penyelaman. Kategori jarak panjang pada saat menyelam adalah:

  • Baik adalah diatas 20 meter, biasanya terdapat di pulau yang jauh dari muara sungai yang besar seperti di Bunaken Provinsi Sulawesi Utara
  • Sedang antara 8 sampai 20 meter, biasanya terletak di pulau-pulau yang agak jauh dari muara sungai seperti di Kepulauan Seribu
  • Buruk kurang dari 8 meter, biasanya terdapat pada pantai-pantai yang dekat dengan muara sungai besar, seperti di pantai utara Jawa.
