Dalam berbagai pembakar, nyala oksidasi adalah nyala api yang dihasilkan karena kelebihan jumlah oksigen dalam suatu reaksi pembakaran. Ketika jumlah oksigen meningkat, nyala api memendek, warnanya menjadi gelap, dan menimbulkan suara desis.[1] Dengan beberapa pengecualian, api pengoksidasi tidak diinginkan dalam proses pengelasan dan penyolderan, karena seperti namanya, nyala jenis ini dapat mengoksidasi permukaan logam.[1]

Nyala api reduksi adalah nyala api dengan kandungan oksigen rendah. Nyala ini memiliki warna kekuning-kuningan karena keberadaan karbon atau hidrokarbon[2] yang mengikat oksigen yang terkandung dalam benda yang sedang diproses dengan nyala api.[1]

Nyala api netral adalah nyala yang jumlah oksigennya cukup, sementara reaksi oksidasi maupun reduksi tidak terjadi.[1] Nyala api netral yang baik berwarna biru jernih.

Api pereduksi dan api netral berguna dalam penyolderan dan penganilan.[1]
