Kota kuno Metropolis terletak di bagain barat Turki di dekat Torbali - sekitar 40 km tenggara Izmir. Kota ini pertama kali ditemukan oleh Profesor Recep Meriç dari Universitas Dokuz Eylül, Izmir, pada tahun 1972. Metropolis telah digali sejak tahun 1989.

Pemukiman pertama di tempat ini muncul pada masa Neolitikum. Sandi yang ditulis dengan huruf hieroglif ditemukan di Akropolis di Metropolis. Metropolis pernah menjadi bagian dari kerajaan Pergamum dan pada masa tersebut Metropolis mencapai masa kejayaannya dalam bidang budaya dan ekonomi. ada dua kuil yang dutemukan di sini, salah satunya adalah kuil Ares
