CUFOS (The Center for UFO Studies Organization) adalah sebuah organisasi yang dengan serius mempelajari suatu kondisi astronomi yang dapat dikategorikan sebagai fenomena UFO. Setelah Dr. Hynek dan timnya mempelajari berbagai laporan UFO, mereka akan memutuskan jika ada gambaran UFO yang diketahui sebagai benda astronomi atau bukan. Ogranisasi ini didirikan oleh Dr. Joseph Allen Hynek pada tahun 1973, seorang profesor astronomi di Universitas Ohio, Amerika Serikat.

Semasa hidupnya juga pernah menjabat sebagai Ketua Departemen Astronomi di Universitas Northwestern, Illinois, Amerika Serikat. Selama tahun 1950-an hingga 1960-an, dia bekerja sebagai konsultan astronomi di Proyek Buku Biru (Blue Book Project) Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat (USAF). Pada awalnya Dr. Hynek memandang semua urusan UFO dengan skeptis, bahkan dia semula tidak percaya akan adanya UFO. Tetapi setelah menguji ratusan laporan-laporan UFO dari para saksi mata, dia menjadi yakin akan UFO dan mempelajarinya dengan sungguh-sungguh. Sejak Proyek Buku Biru resmi ditutup pada tahun 1969, dia mulai serius meneliti baik secara pribadi maupun tergabung dengan berbagai organisasi keilmuan tentang UFO. Mereka bekerja bersama untuk memecahkan teka-teki berbagai fenomena UFO.

Sejak awal dibentuknya The Center for UFO Studies Organization, dia telah mengabdikan seluruh hidupnya sebagai pimpinan CUFOS sampai meninggal dunia pada tahun 1986. Sepeninggalnya, The Center for UFO Studies Organization tetap berlanjut untuk meneruskan dan mengembangkan penelitian Dr. Hynek dalam mempelajari dengan serius dan menguji kebenaran fenomena UFO. Untuk mengenang jasa-jasanya, setelah dia meninggal dunia, CUFOS berubah nama menjadi The J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies.
