2018年7月，宣佈林-曼努爾·米蘭達執導一部改編自舞台劇的電影，該片將是他的導演處女作，並由史蒂文·萊文森（英语：Steven Levenson）撰寫劇本，Imagine Entertainment製作[2]。2019年6月，Netflix收購了該片的發行權，而安德魯·加菲爾德是主角的首要人選[3]。10月，確認加菲爾-德出演電影[4]。11月，宣佈雅莉珊卓·希普、凡妮莎·哈金斯和羅賓·德·哈蘇（英语：Robin de Jesús）加盟劇組[5]。2020年1月，宣佈約書亞·亨利（英语：Joshua Henry）、茱蒂絲·萊特（英语：Judith Light）和布萊德利·惠特福德加盟劇組[6][7]。

主體拍攝於2020年3月3日在紐約市開始進行[8][9]。2020年4月，受2019冠狀病毒病疫情影響，本片暫停拍攝[10]。復拍於同年10月開始進行，並於11月殺青[11][12]。
