第40届学院奖颁奖典礼于1968年4月8日在美國加利福尼亚州洛杉矶县圣莫尼卡的市政礼堂（英语：Santa Monica Civic Auditorium）举行，由鲍勃·霍普再次担任主持人。原本颁奖典礼计划在两天前（4月6日，星期一）举行，但因马丁·路德·金被刺杀此重大事件而推迟。

角逐最佳影片奖的5部电影中有4部反映的是美国当代的社会问题，从侧面表现出了1960年代美国民权运动所带来的冲击。其中《炎热的夜晚》和《誰來晚餐》探讨的是美国的种族问题，《 我倆沒有明天》和《毕业生》则反映的是犯罪和两代人之间的价值冲突这样严肃的社会价值问题。最后获得最佳影片奖的是诺曼·杰威森执导的《炎热的夜晚》，该片还获得了男主角、原著改编、剪辑、录音4个奖项，成为本届学院奖角逐的最大赢家。而迈克·尼科尔斯执导的《毕业生》也成为至今（截止第85届学院奖）最后的一部只单独获得导演奖的电影。

由于黑白片已经变得越来越少，从本届学院奖开始，摄影、艺术指导、服装设计3个奖项均不再按黑白片和彩色片分开颁奖，而是合并成了一个奖项。

由于有电影艺术与科学学院主席格里高利·派克的诚恳邀请，绝大多数获得提名的电影人都出席了颁奖典礼。在20位获提名的演员中，只有因《猜猜谁来吃晚餐》获男主角和女主角奖提名的斯宾塞·屈塞及凯瑟琳·赫本未出席。其中斯宾塞已于1967年6月10日逝世，而凯瑟琳则正在法国拍摄另一部电影《冬狮》。
