Strängnäs, İsveç'in orta-güney kuşağındaki Mälaren Gölü'nün kıyısında yer alan eski bir katedral kentidir.

Şehir hakkında

Strängnäs hakkındaki en eski veriler 1120 yılında, o sıralarda o coğrafya üzerinde yer alan piskoposluk bölgesinin adıyla geçmektedir. Kent o dönemde bir boğazın ve birkaç tepenin bulunduğu bir alan üzerine kuruluydu. Bu tepelerden ikisi ünlüdür. Kentin adı eski Norveççeden gelmiş olup, strengr (dar su kanalı) ve nes (burun veya tepe) sözcüklerinden türetilmiştir. Kentteki ilk manastır 1250'de inşa edildi. Bu manastır yine 1291 yılında açıldı.

Kentin şehir olarak tarihteki en eski kayıtları ise Kral Magnus Eriksson dönemine, 1336'ya dayanmaktadır. Södermanland bölgesinde uzun süre boyunca önemli bir kent olan Strängnäs, bir ticaret kenti olarak ün saldı. 15. ve 16. yüzyıllarda Reform hareketlerinde önemli bir yere sahip olan kent, Laurentius Andreae ve Olaus Petri gibi reformcuları yetiştirdi. Yine Kral Gustav Vasa, 1523'te Strängnäs kentinde başa geldi. Bu süreçte kent birçok eğitim ve kültür merkezine ev sahipliği yapmaya başladı. 1626'da Thomas Lisesi açıldı. Bu okul günümüzde İsveç'in en büyük ikinci lisesidir.

Ancak kentin kalkınması bu süreçten sonra ivme kaybetti. 1871 yılında çıkan yangın dönemin birçok kent binasını ve fabrikayı yıktı. Sonrasında ise kent yavaş adımlarla büyüdü ve günümüzdeki nüfusuna ulaştı. Kent, ortalama üstü bir sanayi kenti olmasının yanı sıra 12,000 üzerinde bir nüfusa sahiptir. Başkent Stokholm, kentin birkaç kilometre doğusunda bulunur.
