Mezosfer, atmosferin deniz düzeyinden 50 km - 80 km yükselti arasında kalan tabakasıdır.[1]

Atmosferin "stratosfer" adı verilen alt tabakası ile "termosfer" adı verilen en üst tabakası arasında yer alan mezosferde, sıcaklıklar alt sınırı olan stratopozda 0 °C iken, 77 °C kadar yükselir, sonra üst sınırı oluşturan mezopozda -90 °C'a kadar düşer. Mezosferin altında, Güneş ışınlarının enerjisi Yer yüzeyi ve ozon tabakası tarafından soğurulur. 1991'de fırlatılan ABD uzay araştırma aracı Discovery, mezosferde rüzgâr dalgaları gözlemiştir.

Stratosfer ile sınırını, sıcaklık artışının bir kez daha tersine döndüğü stratopoz düzeyi belirler. Mezosfer boyunca sıcaklık yine artan yükseklikle birlikte, basınçla orantılı olarak düşmeye devam eder ve 90 km. de -100oC olur. Mezosferde atmosfer yoğunluğu deniz düzeyindekine göre 1/1000-1/1.000.000 kadardır. Ancak bu seyrek gaz kütlesi de yeryüzündeki yaşam açısından önemlidir. Küçük boyuttaki göktaşları, hızla girdikleri bu katmanda sürtünme etkisi ile buharlaşarak yok olurlar.
