Arikara Savaşı

Arikara Muharebesi Ağustos 1823'te Birleşik Devletler ve Missouri Nehri yakınındaki Arikara halkı arasında yapılmış muharebedir. Bu bölge günümüzde Güney Dakota olarak geçmektedir.[1]

Tarih

Lewis ve Clark Keşifleri sırasında 1804'te Arikara'ya ulaştılar, yerliler beyaz insanlara karşı düşmanlık beslemedi. 1805'te, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin başkentine giderken, Arikara başkanı öldü ve Kızılderililer bu olayı Amerikanların yaptığını düşündü. Daha sonra, kürklü aşiretler beyaz insanlara sürekli baskınlar yapmaya başladılar.

Temmuz 1823'te Arikaralılar Rocky Dağları'na saldırı düzenlediler. Arikaralılar tekneli tüccarlara saldırı düzenlediler ve 15 kişiyi öldürdüler. Bunun üzerine Birleşik Devletler komutasındaki Yarbay Henry Leavenworth 6. Birlikten 230 Amerikan askeri, 750 Sidoux askeri ve 50 avcı ile kızılderililere saldırı düzenledi.[1]

Çatışmanın 2 farklı sonucu vardır. Birincisi, bu savaş Birleşik Devletler ve Batılı Yerli Amerikanlar arasında yapılan ilk savaş olmuştur. İkincisi, Leavenworth Arikaları tamamiyle yenememiştir. Leavenworth'ün yumuşaklığı tartışmalara neden olmuş orduda uzlaşmazlık çıkmıştır.

Sonuç olarak Arikaralar Kuzey Dakota'ya taşınmak zorunda kalmışlardır. Birçok Arikalar ve Apsalokeler Amerika'ya bağlanmış Sioux Savaşları'nda izci görevi yapmışlardır.
